Security Awareness Tips
No one is immune to cyber threats:
• Use antivirus software to protect your computer against malware.
• Use firewalls to filter the traffic that may enter your device.
• Stay alert and avoid clicking on a suspicious link.
• Update your operating system.
Don’t open email attachments unless you know they are legitimate. If you’re uncertain, contact the sender to confirm it is safe and secure.
Avoid using Wi-Fi that is public or not secure for online activities such as banking, online shopping, or handling personal or medical records.
Keep your internet browser and any extensions updated. Using the most recent version gives you enhanced cyber security.
Malware can compromise social media accounts. Avoid accepting invitations from unfamiliar people and organizations, and remove suspicious followers from your accounts – they may be “bots” trying to access your personal data.
Enable two-factor authentication (2FA), which helps to confirm your identity during login to any of your platforms.
Audit your phone and computer apps. Remove unused ones, update those that need it, and review the app permissions for data access and modification.
Turn off the automatic WiFi connection feature, deactivate the auto-discovery function, and keep Bluetooth turned off. Although convenient, these features make your data vulnerable in a public setting.
Stay informed about current and ongoing scams and never share your personal information. Take a moment to think before you act: If the offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
